Nollywood - Africa's Booming Film Industry

Nollywood, Nigeria’s film-producing industry, started sparsely in the mid-1990s, becoming today a booming industry with over 300 producing companies with some top-notch producers and directors. With thousands of films produced and distributed around Africa and worldwide today, the industry has created actors and actresses who can now be said to equal if not rival movie stars in Hollywood (in the West) and Bollywood (in the East). What may be different in the movies produced in Nigeria, followed slowly by Ghana, and other African countries, is that the themes in these films are more realistic to the reality of Africa than any film made in the West on or about Africa.
African filmmakers, using innovative cinematography made possible by digital technologies, not only provide African filmgoers with various themes but also indigenous settings. Genre covered include action, drama, horror, and romance thrillers. Another genre, the “traditional,” adds another dimension to better understanding the African psyche.
The purpose of this blog will be to present African movie reviews to not only help viewers to appreciate the subject matters of these films but also to learn about their thematic importance. Readers are encouraged to react to our “reviews” with their comments.
